I have been working with people in debt for 10 years. Unfortunately the numbers of people in the UK who are struggling with debt problems is currently getting worse. We were seeing the fastest growth in people declaring themselves insolvent since the economic downturn in the early 1990s.
Whenever I have looked for written information about debt solutions, I have always been disappointed that all of the books available seem to be written by Americans for Americans. There never seemed to be anything written specifically for people in Britain which describes the options open to us.
The book is aimed at helping people in the UK with personal debt problems. I wanted it to be informative but easy to read and so there was no point in writing a text book about debt solutions full of technical language and jargon. I believe that this would just put people off.
I therefore decided to use a conversational style. The book looks at the four main ways that personal debt problems can be resolved: Consolidation, Debt Management Plans, Individual Voluntary Arrangement and Bankruptcy. I have tried to describe each of these solutions, when they could be used and their advantages and disadvantages.
To aid the reader, there is also a case study at the end of each chapter which describes how each solution has been used in practise and the results. As well as information about how to solve a debt problem, I also thought it was important to write about how to stay out of debt in the first place. The last chapter is therefore dedicated to hints and tips about managing your personal budget and living within your means.
In our current society of “have now, pay later”, living within a budget is one of the things that most of us have to contend with on a daily basis. This skill does not often come naturally but is unfortunately rarely taught at school. I hope my book will help to start remedying this situation.
